U.S. Meets Thai Supreme Commander For Bombings

The U.S. Ambassador met with the Thai Supreme Commander on Thursday to discuss the three bomb blasts in downtown Bangkok. The U.S. Embassy Spokesman confirmed the U.S. did not discourage its citizens to travel to Thailand but suggested that they be careful. Before U.S. Ambassador to Thailand Kristie Kenny traveled to meet Supreme Commander Gen.Thanasak Patimapakorn at 2 pm today, U.S. Embassy Spokesman Braunohler told reporters that U.S. diplomats regularly talked to Thai officials in the national police bureau, the army and national security units. He said the meeting between the Ambassador and the Supreme Commander today would touch on the 14 February blasts in Bangkok. The U.S. Embassy expressed deep sorrow with the injured, the Spokesman said. US Consulate In Chiang Mai On Security Alert

The US Consulate General in Chiang Mai has tightened security after the province has been named a terror target. Following 3 blasts in central Bangkok on Tuesday, the US government and 9 other countries have issued alert messages for their citizens while traveling in Thailand. Included in the alert is the list of provinces that Washington has named as possible terror target, and Chiang Mai is one of them. As a result, the US Consulate General has stepped up security measures, such as thorough searches on visitors and their belongings, more security guards around its premises, and a ban on parking near the compound wall. Elsewhere in the province, the Chiang Mai Police Department has also ordered more patrols at all popular tourist attractions, other foreign consulates, and areas popular among foreign expatriates in the province. Thailand Foreign Ministry Meet Ambassadors For Terror Alert

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will this week invite ambassadors of 16 countries which have not yet canceled the terror alert for Thailand to explain the current situation to them. Foreign Affairs Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said although the U.S.’s terror alert was still in place, the U.S. embassy had agreed to lower the alert level. The terror alert message which used to appear on the front page of the embassy’s website is now on the inner page. The permanent secretary for foreign affairs is scheduled to convene with the ambassadors of 16 countries, including the U.S., within this week in order to create a better understanding with them about the current situation in Thailand. Tshering Dorji Bhutanese Ambassador To Bid Farewell From Thailand

His Excellency Mr. Tshering Dorji, Bhutanese Ambassador to Thailand, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra at the Government House to bid farewell upon completing his term of office in Thailand. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has invited the Deputy Chief of Mission from the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok to discuss Thailand's security after the latter's posting of terror warnings last week. Yingluck Shinawatra Celebrates Chinese New Year at Chinese Embassy

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra paid a visit to the Chinese Embassy earlier this morning to attend the Chinese New Year celebration during which she was told to paint an eye on a lion mask, a symbolic gesture, according to a Chinese belief, to bring prosperity and happiness to Thai and Chinese people in Thailand. Ms. Yingluck was greeted by the ambassador, Mr. Guan Mu, upon her arrival. Participants of this event had witnessed spectacular performances ranging from lion dances to Chinese opera, clay sculpturing and paintings, as well as Chinese music using both Thai and Chinese musical instruments. Security Beefed Up At US And Israeli Embassies In Thailand

National Police Chief Police General Priewpan Damapong has ordered 24-hour surveillance on the US and Israeli embassies as well as tourist attractions in Bangkok to ensure no violence. Pol. Gen. Priewpan has given instructions to the Metropolitan Police Bureau, the Crime Suppression Division and the Tourist Police to stringently monitor the areas at risk of being attacked by terrorists, such as Khao San Road, Soi Rambuttri and Soi Sukhumvit 22. The U.S. Embassy had circulated a warning that there was a real and credible terrorist threat against Americans in Bangkok, and Israel issued a similar warning to its citizens. Thai authorities confirmed being informed of a plot and said they were pursuing the missing suspect.
